Are you off or coming off the medication and aren’t sure what to do next?

Are you ready to improve your relationship with food and maintain a stable healthy weight?

Diabetes Drugs and Unhealthy Weight Loss Drugs

Have you taken a diabetes drug that is also being used “off-label” for weight loss? You’re not alone. Diabetes drugs in the GLP-1 agonists class offer a powerful new option to treat obesity that may soon be used by billions of ordinary people around the world whose weight has made them unhealthy. Mimicking the action of a hormone called glucagon-like peptide 1, these GLP-1s stimulate the body to produce more insulin when blood sugar levels start to rise after you eat. The extra insulin helps lower blood sugar levels, which helps control type 2 diabetes.

How are they helping with weight loss? While that’s not quite as clear, GLP-1s appear to help curb hunger and slow the movement of food from the stomach into the small intestine. As a result, you may feel full faster and longer, so you eat less.

But what happens when you stop taking the drug? What happens when you haven’t made lifestyle and habit changes necessary for successful long-term weight loss? What happens now?

Why are diabetic drugs unhealthy for weight loss?

There are many effects of sudden weight loss as a result of an an extremely restricted caloric intake, including changes in metabolic rate and malnutrition. When the body is in starvation mode, it adapts to the caloric input provided, meaning the amount of calories needed to sustain the body decreases. This impacts the bodys set point moving forward. In addition, the body starts to use fat as the main energy source to conserve glucose (prefered energy source). Your body burns fat when it’s starving, resulting in an excess of ketones in the blood. This can lead to ketoacidosis, which can cause death if not quickly resolved. It can also lead to gallbladder issues, pancreatitis, and fatty liver disease if the person is not regularly checking in with their doctor. Malnutrition can be defined as inadequate nutrient intake, and it happens when people are not eating enough food, or they’re eating foods with low nutritional value. People who use Ozempic or other diabetes weight loss drugs should consistently meet with their doctor to monitor their nutritional status and overall health and prevent any negative nutrient deficiencies.
